The Power of the Tongue: Direction in Surrender
Our tongues possess a remarkable power to direct and influence.
James 3:3-4 compares the tongue to a "bit that controls a horse and a rudder that steers a ship".
Just as a small bit guides the entire body of a horse and a small rudder determines the course of a massive ship, our tongues have the ability to direct the trajectory of our lives and the lives of others. Harnessing the power of our tongues begins with surrendering the control of our hearts to Jesus Christ.
Self-Discipline and Spiritual Maturity:
Spiritual maturity is demonstrated through self-discipline, and self-discipline starts with mastering the tongue. Our ability to control our tongues reflects our level of self-discipline and our commitment to surrendering our desires to God. Words often lead to actions, and by harnessing our tongues, we gain control over our entire beings. Surrendering the control of our hearts to Christ allows Him to be the captain of our ships, guiding and directing our lives.
The Lordship of Jesus:
When Jesus becomes the Lord of our hearts, He also becomes the Lord of our tongues. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). As Solomon wisely warned, death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). By surrendering our hearts to Christ, we invite Him to guard our mouths and incline our hearts away from evil. When Jesus is the Lord of our hearts, our conversations with spouses, children, and those around us are transformed. Surrendered hearts translate into impactful and life-giving conversations.
The Power of Directed Words:
Our words have the power to affect the direction of people's lives. Like uncontrolled horses or ships, uncontrolled tongues can cause tremendous damage. Therefore, it is crucial that our tongues direct others in the right way. The power to guide and influence others lies within our tongues. By using our tongues to speak truth, love, and wisdom, we can help direct others toward the right choices and paths.
Surrendering Control of the Heart:
To gain control over our tongues, we must surrender control of our hearts to Jesus. Allowing Jesus to be the Lord of our hearts means submitting to His will and inviting Him to guide our thoughts, desires, and actions. Surrendering our hearts to Jesus aligns our intentions with His, enabling us to speak words that bring life, hope, and direction to those around us.
Conclusion:
The power of the tongue to direct and influence is immense.
By surrendering the control of our hearts to Jesus Christ, we allow Him to be the Lord of our tongues.
Our words have the ability to shape the trajectory of people's lives, either leading them toward life-giving choices or causing harm.
May we strive to surrender our hearts daily, saying, "Your will be done, Lord," and allow Him to guide our words and direct our conversations.
Through the power of a surrendered heart, we can speak words that bring direction, healing, and transformation to those we encounter.
Challenge:
Surrender your heart to Jesus: Invite Him to be the Lord of your heart, guiding your thoughts, desires, and words.
Practice self-discipline: Harness the power of your tongue through self-control and surrender to God's guidance.
Speak life-giving words: Let your conversations reflect the direction and wisdom of God, offering hope and guidance to others.
May our tongues be instruments of direction, guided by a surrendered heart, and reflecting the transformative power of Jesus Christ.
