Involving God in your plans
James 4:13-17 - Boasting About Tomorrow
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”—
14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.
15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”
16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil
17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
Have you ever made plans with friends, only to have them fall through?
Perhaps you were excited at the prospect of a weekend trip, or a dinner reservation at a fancy new restaurant, but without fail, something always seemed to come up, and the plans were abandoned.
This can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you are excited about something you truly believe will bring you joy.
In James 4:13-17, we find a timeless instruction about the importance of involving God in your plans.
James warns against making plans solely for the purpose of profit, noting that we cannot know what tomorrow will bring.
He reminds us that life is a gift from God, and that our identity and purpose are defined by Him.
1 Corinthians 10:31 emphasizes the importance of doing everything for the glory of God.
This means that we must invite God into every aspect of our lives, including our plans for the future.
We should not make plans with the sole intention of benefiting ourselves, but should instead seek to glorify God in everything we do.
The Covid-19 pandemic has driven home the truth of the uncertainty of life.
We do not know what the future will bring, and we must accept that fact.
This does not mean that we should stop making plans, but rather that we should involve God in our plans, recognizing that our identity and purpose can only be found in Him.
When we involve God in our plans, we can trust that He will guide us in the direction He wants us to go.
We can also trust that if our plans do not come to fruition, it is for the greater good and God's glory.
We must remember that God is certain, reliable, unchanging, and always present.
In conclusion, James 4:13-17 reminds us that it is essential to involve God in our plans.
We must recognise that our identity and purpose can only be found in Him, and seek to glorify Him in everything we do.
The uncertainty of life may make us feel anxious, but when we involve God in our plans, we can trust that He will guide us in the direction that is best for us.
Let us remember that God is always present, and it is essential to involve Him in our plans, always.
